The NordicTrack Commercial 1750 is also foldable, sturdy, and smart. The built-in touchscreen and interactive iFIT programming are where this treadmill really comes to life. Lindsay Scheele, GGR’s lead product tester and a certified personal trainer, tested the 1750 and called the monitor “beautiful.” She noted that it was sleek-looking, responsive, and easy to use, giving it 4.5 out of 5 stars.

During trainer-led treadmill sessions, you can take advantage of a hands-free workout experience with auto-adjust technology. The treadmill incline, decline, and speed will automatically adjust based on your trainer’s coaching and your prior performance.

For workouts on and off the treadmill, iFIT will track your progress on the home screen and keep track of any workout milestones. The app will also make suggestions for workout programs you might like based on what you’ve completed.

Lindsay rated the iFIT programming a perfect 5 out of 5 stars. “There is a huge amount of programming available through iFIT,” she commented. “It should fit almost any workout preference.”

One of the only things Lindsay didn’t like about the NordicTrack Commercial 1750 was its size. She rated it just 3.5 out of 5 stars for portability. While she was able to deadlift the deck to fold it up without any issues, she noted that the machine wasn’t easy to move around since it weighs over 300 pounds.

Our testers also measured the distance between you and the treadmill, helping you understand exactly how far you’ll have to reach to change the settings. We found that our tester was 27 inches away from the incline and speed buttons, 23 inches from the start/stop button, and 17 inches from the handrails.

We also measured the button responsiveness to ensure prompt responses to user input, and found that this treadmill was more responsive than most of the others we tested. It required just under 5 pounds of pressure before the console recognized a request to start or stop the machine or adjust the incline and speed settings.

Best Budget Smart Treadmill: ProForm Pro 2000

Good for: Anyone looking for a smart treadmill and interactive programming options, all under $2,000

The ProForm Pro 2000 is one of our more budget-friendly picks when it comes to treadmills with smart technology. This treadmill won’t cost you more than $2,000, and you have the option to finance directly through the ProForm website for 0% APR for the first 12 months.

The ProForm Pro 2000 has a 60-inch running deck complete with ReBound Pro, the brand’s patented shock-absorbing system. The Pro 2000 also features a powerful motor and a 300-pound user weight capacity. Additionally, this ProForm treadmill comes with iFIT, which offers trainer-led treadmill workouts and auto-adjust technology.

GGR’s lead product reviewer and certified personal trainer, Lindsay Scheele, is a big fan of the iFIT programming. She rated it 5 out of 5 stars, saying, “The iFIT programming is one of my top picks, especially when it comes to treadmills. It’s got walking, it’s got hiking, it’s got intervals…there are so many classes to choose from.” Just note that while the ProForm 2000 comes with a 30-day free trial for iFIT, you have to pay about $39 per month for a family membership once the trial period ends.

Using iFIT also gives you access to off-treadmill sessions like strength training and yoga. Although this treadmill doesn’t feature a tilt and pivot screen, if you want to do any floor training, you can log into the iFIT app on your phone or tablet and take your workout from the treadmill to the living room.

Lindsay pointed out that the 10-inch touchscreen is small, especially considering the treadmill’s price point of about $2,000. “I’ve used a lot of treadmills, and I prefer a 14-inch screen. Ten inches is kind of small, but it’s still an okay option,” she commented. She gave the monitor on the ProForm Pro 2000 4 out of 5 stars.

One word of caution from Lindsay: Since the machine weighs 262 pounds, the box the treadmill arrives in won’t be easy to move, especially if you have to carry it up or downstairs. Once assembled, though, it should be fairly easy to maneuver because there are dual transport wheels on the front. ProForm’s EasyLift Assist technology also allows most able-bodied individuals to fold the deck up or down with ease.

Ultimately, Lindsay rated the treadmill 3.5 out of 5 stars for portability.

Best Smart Treadmill for Beginners: Horizon 7.4 AT

Good for: Folks looking for a Bluetooth-enabled treadmill to connect with fitness apps

The Horizon 7.4 AT might not be exactly what you think of when we say smart treadmill because it does not feature a built-in touchscreen. However, we think the 7.4 AT deserves a spot on this list because it can connect via Bluetooth to popular third-party apps like Peloton. The Bluetooth technology with the treadmill also allows you to simultaneously connect your fitness apps in addition to a wireless heart rate monitor.

In fact, we gave the Horizon 7.4 AT 5 out of 5 stars for programming even though it doesn’t have built-in instructor-led classes. We like that you’re not locked into a specific service and can choose whichever one you prefer.

The thing that makes the Horizon 7.4 AT so smart is that it can transmit speed and distance metrics to several of the best workout apps. Running on the 7.4 AT means you’re not just following along with an app of your choice—you’re using a machine that can help you track your progress.

If you just want to use the machine and the handful of built-in programs the 7.8 AT offers, you have the option to do that, too. The treadmill will function just fine without any interactive programming.

The 3.5 CHP motor can handle everything from gentle walks to sprint intervals. Lindsay Scheele, the lead product reviewer here at GGR, gave the machine 4.5 out of 5 stars for durability and stability. “This is a sturdy treadmill. Even when I was using it at its top speed, I didn’t notice any shaking or wobbling,” she said.

Although the Horizon 7.4 AT might not feature automatic incline and speed adjustments, the console features a pair of upright handles with QuickDial controls. The controls allow you to rapidly change speed and incline with a swift roll of a dial rather than fumbling with buttons on the console.Lindsay rated the adjustment mechanisms 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Our tester, who is 5’11”, measured the distance to the various controls while using the treadmill. The main console is 13 inches away, and the armrests are 18 inches away, which is within easy reach. However, the drink holder is 24 inches away, so you may have to reach a little further for your beverage.

The buttons are responsive, and require about 3 pounds of pressure for the console to register a request from the user.

All that said, we still only gave the Horizon 7.4 AT 3.5 out of 5 stars for value. There are a lot of things we like about it, but with an MSRP of around $2,400, we do wish it offered a bit more. You can often find it for about $1,600 or less, though, which we think is a more reasonable price.

Best Durable Smart Treadmill: Sole F80 Treadmill

Good for: Folks looking for a reliable treadmill machine with just a touch of tech

Firstly, our expert product testers appreciate that Sole Fitness offers a lifetime warranty on the frame and motor for most of its treadmills, which is a breath of fresh air for anyone who owns a large piece of fitness equipment.

In addition to a high-quality treadmill warranty, the Sole F80 has some additional features that make it a durable machine for avid runners, including a powerful 3.5 horsepower motor and a 350-pound user weight capacity.It also has a 22-inch wide running deck versus the 20-inch width we usually see in treadmills.

Lindsay Scheele, GGR’s expert product tester who tested the F80, said she didn’t think the extra two inches was necessary. Still, she noted that it is a nice feature to have, especially for larger individuals or those who tend to move side to side when they run. She also said the machine felt stable when running at high speeds, giving it 4 out of 5 stars for durability and 4.5 out of 5 stars for performance.

The Sole F80 is not only a durable treadmill, it also offers more tech features than most other products from Sole Fitness. Lindsay rated its features and conveniences 4 out of 5 stars. There’s a 10-inch touchscreen monitor, and the machine comes with built-in workout programs like HIIT, 5k, 10k, and fitness tests for military personnel. The Bluetooth capabilities allow you to integrate your phone or tablet with the Sole+ app, where you can access hundreds of free classes.

Lindsay also enjoyed the wireless charging pad on the console. “If you’re using your phone to play music or watch TV, this is definitely a handy feature,” she said.

Sole claims that the cushioning on the F80 reduces impact to the joints by 40%, but Lindsay didn’t think the cushioning was significantly different than other treadmills she’s used. She gave the ergonomics a score of 4 out of 5.

We had our 6-foot-tall tester measure the distance to the various controls and found that the armrests were 17 inches away, and the incline and speed paddles were 22 inches away. However, he said the console controls were over an arm’s length away, as he had to reach 30″ to reach the speed and incline controls, and 22″ to reach the start and stop buttons.

The buttons required exactly 5 pounds of pressure to respond to user input.

Best Smart Treadmill for Runners: Bowflex Treadmill 22

Good for: Runners who want the ability to stream entertainment or interactive programming

The Bowflex Treadmill 22 delivers a 60-inch-long running deck adequate for tall runners or folks with a long stride, plus incline training up to 20% and decline down to -5%. It also has Comfort Tech deck cushioning to dampen the impact running and sprinting can have on your joints, as well as interactive programming that supplies a virtual personal trainer in the comfort of your home gym.

We haven’t tested the Treadmill 22, but we did test the Bowflex Treadmill 10. The two have a lot of similarities. Our product testers especially enjoyed the comfortable running deck on the Treadmill 10 and were happy to see the same dimensions on the Treadmill 22. They gave the Treadmill 22 a score of 4.5 out of 5 stars for ergonomics.

Your purchase of the Bowflex Treadmill 22 comes with a one-year free trial of the JRNY app that you can access on the 22-inch touchscreen console. JRNY has on-demand fitness classes for both cardio and strength training, and scenic running options with Explore the World.

With JRNY, you can also stream videos and shows from other services like Hulu and Disney+, leading our reviews to rate the programming 5 out of 5 stars. Memberships for those streaming services are sold separately. However, it’s worth noting that the app overlays your workout metrics around the borders of your screen so you don’t have to toggle in and out of your show to track your progress.

We appreciate the 15-year frame and motor warranty on this treadmill, but we still gave it just 4 out of 5 stars for its brand policies. If you decide you don’t like the treadmill, you only have 2 weeks to return it. Most other brands have at least a 30-day return policy.

Best Incline Smart Treadmill: NordicTrack X22i

Good for: Anyone who is serious about hill climbing and incline training

The NordicTrack X22i is a large piece of equipment for home use. But if you’re someone who trains for hill climbing or incline sprints, you’ll likely appreciate the incredible incline range of up to 40% and decline capabilities down to -6%. Our product testers gave it 5 out of 5 stars for both customizations and adjustability due to the versatility it offers.

This treadmill also features a powerful 4.0 CHP motor, top speeds of 12 mph, and a 60-inch-long tread belt.“The motor is beyond what we’d recommend for a home gym treadmill, even for serious runners,” one product tester commented.

In addition to this treadmill being bulky, it’s not a folding treadmill, so you’ll need dedicated space in your home gym for it. We gave it just 3.5 out of 5 stars for portability since its large design may limit where in your home you can put it. (You also can’t put the treadmill in your garage, because that will void the warranty.) However, if you’re looking for incline ranges that can simulate outdoor hill training and shock absorption, this is the ultimate machine.

Former GGR staff writer and product tester Caroline Lubinsky rated the ergonomics 5 out of 5 stars. “The deck cushioning is very responsive. I’ve had reconstructive ankle surgery, so I appreciate how much this deck reduces pressure on my joints,” she said.

You’ll also benefit from on-demand interactive programming with an iFIT membership. You can utilize automatic trainer control for adjusting your incline, decline, and speed levels. In addition, the trainer control tracks your performance metrics. The Google Maps technology allows you to drop a pin and virtually work out nearly anywhere in the world.

Best High-End Smart Treadmill: Peloton Tread

Good for: Runners who want to experience live and on-demand workouts from home

Peloton is one of the top brands in at-home fitness and paved the way for at-home workouts with live sessions and on-demand studio classes. Peloton’s collection of classes covers everything from treadmill running to boxing to mediation.

The Peloton Tread offers a 59-inch running belt, a decent 3.0 CHP motor, a weight capacity of 300 pounds, and a max speed of 12 mph. The specs on the Peloton Tread compare to both the NordicTrack X22i and Bowflex Treadmill 22, but the Peloton app is where the real draw is—customers rave over the quality of the community, trainers, and programming.

Our product testers agree. In our Peloton app review, former GGR staff writer Caroline Lubinsky rated the programming 4.5 out of 5 stars. She praised the variety of classes available, the music selection, and the collections of both indoor and outdoor workouts.

The Peloton Tread comes with a 23.8-inch touchscreen to navigate your next workout and view past workout metrics. The screen also comes with speakers built into the monitor. A friend of GGR named Dawn Chapman, who’s completed over 1,500 Peloton workouts, said the quality of the speakers helped create a boutique exercise experience. We rated the tech capabilities 5 out of 5 stars.

Additionally, if you’re an Apple Watch user, you can pair your device to the treadmill for automatic syncing of your workouts to stay on top of your fitness goals.

At just under $3,000, this isn’t a budget-friendly treadmill. You also have to pay about $44 per month for the Peloton All-Access Membership. The good news is that the cost of the machine includes delivery and assembly. There is no option for you to assemble the treadmill yourself.

We consider this both good and bad. It’s convenient for those who aren’t used to building big pieces of equipment, but it’s a drawback for people who are more handy and independent. For this reason, we couldn’t give it a perfect score for delivery and setup but still rated it 4 out of 5 stars in this category.

For example, if you’re looking for a treadmill that can sync your metrics to any of the best fitness trackers or your phone, make sure the treadmill you want can do that. Some machines are only set up to use Bluetooth for the built-in speaker function.

Machine Capability
